Identity Theft: What you really need to know
While we'll do everything we can to keep your personal information private and protected, there are several steps that you need to take in order to increase your protection. Please read the following information carefully, and visit the web links provided in this page.
Tips to protect your identity:
- Never give out your financial information such as checking, credit card numbers, or Social Security numbers unless you know the person or organization.
- Report lost or stolen checks immediately.
- Shred any financial solicitations such as credit card, insurance, and other offers you may receive in the mail.
- Closely guard your automated teller machine card transactions. Review your account statements, be on guard when using your ATM card for withdrawals and be sure no one is lurking around to copy down your account number and access code.
- Order a credit report once a year to review your file. Call 1-877-322-8228 to order your free credit report or visit www.annualcreditreport.com
Beware of "Phishing"
Phishing is a form of social engineering characterized by attempts to fraudulently acquire sensitive information (passwords, account and credit card details, etc.) by pretending to be a trustworthy person or business in an apparently official electronic communication, such as an e-mail or instant message. Often the message includes a warning regarding a problem related to your account and requests you to respond by clicking on a link to a fraudulent website that requests specific and confidential information from you.
PWC Federal Credit Union will never request your personal or account information through e-mail or other means of electronic communication. If you receive an e-mail or instant message requesting your personal or account information, do not respond, and notify PWC Federal Credit Union of the situation immediately.
